DRAM

A type of semiconductor memory chip used for temporary data storage in computers, servers, and mobile devices.

Dynamic Random-Access Memory (DRAM) is a type of semiconductor memory chip that serves as the high-speed, volatile working memory in computers, servers, smartphones, and graphics cards. Unlike non-volatile flash memory (such as NAND), DRAM requires a continuous electrical current to maintain its stored data. When a device is powered off, any information stored in the DRAM is lost. Because of its speed, it is essential for holding the active data and code that a device's processor needs to access quickly. From an investment perspective, DRAM is treated as a highly cyclical commodity. The manufacturing of DRAM is capital-intensive and concentrated among a small number of global semiconductor companies. Because building new fabrication plants takes years and billions of dollars, supply cannot easily adjust to short-term demand shifts. As a result, the industry experiences severe boom-and-bust cycles driven by supply-demand imbalances, which directly impact the spot and contract pricing of memory chips. Investors monitor DRAM average selling prices (ASPs) and industry inventory levels as leading indicators for the broader technology sector. High or rising DRAM prices typically signal strong demand from end-markets like enterprise data centers, artificial intelligence hardware, or consumer electronics, which expands the gross margins of chipmakers. Conversely, a supply glut leads to rapid price erosion, forcing manufacturers to write down inventory and face severe margin compression, while temporarily benefiting downstream hardware assemblers who buy these chips.

A memory manufacturer produces DRAM chips at an all-in cost of $2.00 per gigabyte. During a supply shortage caused by a surge in data center builds, the market contract price for DRAM rises from $2.50 to $3.50 per gigabyte. The manufacturer's gross margin per gigabyte increases from ($3.50 - $2.00) / $3.50 = 42.9% compared to ($2.50 - $2.00) / $2.50 = 20.0% in the prior period.
