Front-Month Contract
The futures contract with the shortest time to expiration, typically the most actively traded.
A front-month contract is the futures contract listed on an exchange that has the shortest remaining duration until its expiration date. Because it is closest to the settlement date, it typically commands the highest trading volume, open interest, and liquidity of all available maturities. Consequently, the front-month contract serves as the primary benchmark price quoted by financial media and market participants for underlying assets like crude oil, natural gas, gold, or equity indices. As the front-month contract nears its final trading day, market participants must either close out their positions or "roll" them forward into the next available expiration month. This transition of volume and open interest from the expiring contract to the subsequent month is known as the rollover period. During this time, trading activity shifts rapidly, and the next-out contract officially inherits the designation of the front-month contract. Investors and commodity traders monitor the front-month contract to gauge real-time, immediate supply and demand dynamics in the physical markets. However, retail investors must be cautious of "roll yield" and price distortions when tracking these contracts over time. Because long-term historical charts are constructed by stitching consecutive front-month contracts together, the price gaps that occur during rollovers can create artificial trends or distortions that do not reflect actual underlying market performance.
In late October, an investor looks at West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil futures. The November contract is the front-month contract, trading at $75.00 per barrel, while the December contract trades at $75.50. As the November contract approaches its expiration date in late October, the investor rolls their long position by selling the November contract at $75.00 and buying the December contract at $75.50, incurring a roll cost of $0.50 per barrel ($75.50 - $75.00 = $0.50).
