Gross Merchandise Volume
The total dollar value of merchandise sold through a marketplace or platform over a specified period.
Gross Merchandise Volume (GMV) is a key performance metric used by e-commerce platforms, multi-merchant marketplaces, and digital payment processors. It represents the total dollar value of all goods and services sold through a platform over a specific period. GMV is measured before deducting expenses like advertising, platform transaction fees, shipping costs, and product returns. Because it tracks the total volume of commerce passing through the ecosystem, it serves as a primary gauge of a platform's scale and transaction growth. To calculate GMV, a platform multiplies the sales price of all items sold by the total number of completed transactions. Investors analyze GMV alongside actual revenue to calculate the platform's 'take rate'—the percentage of transaction volume the platform successfully captures as sales. This relationship is critical because a platform can have massive GMV but generate very little revenue if its take rate is low or if it must offer heavy discounts to attract transactions. While high GMV growth indicates expanding market share and customer adoption, it can be a misleading indicator of financial health when viewed in isolation. A major pitfall of GMV is that it does not account for customer returns, canceled orders, or promotional subsidies. For example, a marketplace might artificially inflate its GMV by offering massive coupons that make transactions unprofitable, or by experiencing high return rates that ultimately erase the underlying sales. Consequently, investors should always cross-reference GMV with net revenue, operating margins, and customer acquisition costs.
An online marketplace facilitates 500,000 transactions in a quarter, with an average transaction value of $40. The total Gross Merchandise Volume is 500,000 $40 = $20,000,000. If the platform charges sellers a 5% fee on each transaction, its actual revenue for the quarter is $20,000,000 0.05 = $1,000,000.
