import prices
An economic indicator that measures the changes in the prices of goods and services purchased from abroad.
Import prices measure the price changes of non-domestic goods and services purchased by residents, businesses, or government entities of a country from foreign sellers. Typically compiled monthly by national statistical agencies, this index tracks price movements across various categories, including raw materials, manufactured goods, and petroleum products. The data is collected directly from importers and is adjusted to exclude domestic duties and taxes to isolate the true cost of foreign goods. Investors monitor import prices closely because they serve as an early warning system for domestic inflation. When a country imports raw materials or components at higher prices, domestic manufacturers often pass these increased costs down the supply chain, eventually raising consumer prices. Consequently, rising import prices can signal that broader inflation is likely to accelerate, which may prompt central banks to raise interest rates to cool the economy. For stock and bond investors, the index helps gauge profit margin pressures on multinational corporations and domestic manufacturers. High or rapidly rising import prices can squeeze the margins of companies that rely heavily on foreign supply chains, especially if those companies lack the pricing power to pass costs onto consumers. Conversely, falling import prices can indicate easing supply chain pressures, though excessively low or negative import price growth can sometimes signal weak global demand or a strengthening domestic currency.
Suppose a domestic electronics manufacturer imports semiconductor components from abroad. If the national import price index for electronic components rises from 100 to 105, it represents a 5% increase in import costs. If these components make up $40 of a device's $100 production cost, the manufacturer's cost of goods sold increases by $2.00 ($40 0.05), forcing them to either absorb the cost or raise the retail price.
