Managed Revenue

A financial metric that adjusts reported revenue to include tax-exempt income on a fully taxable-equivalent basis.

Managed revenue is a non-GAAP financial metric used primarily by banks and other financial institutions. It adjusts reported net interest income to present tax-exempt revenue, such as interest earned on municipal bonds or tax-advantaged loans, on a fully taxable-equivalent basis. This adjustment allows analysts and investors to evaluate the bank's top-line performance as if all of its interest-earning assets were subject to standard corporate tax rates. To calculate managed revenue, a bank determines the tax-exempt portion of its interest income and grosses it up using its marginal tax rate. This tax-equivalent adjustment is then added to the GAAP-reported revenue. By standardizing the tax treatment of different asset classes, the metric provides a more accurate representation of the bank's underlying economic yield and operational performance. Investors care about managed revenue because it facilitates a fairer comparison between institutions with different asset allocations. A bank with a large portfolio of tax-exempt municipal bonds might show artificially lower GAAP revenue compared to a peer holding only taxable corporate debt. Looking at managed revenue prevents this distortion and helps investors better evaluate key profitability metrics like net interest margin and the efficiency ratio. When analyzing managed revenue, investors should compare it directly to GAAP revenue to understand the scale of the tax-equivalent adjustments. A widening gap between the two indicates that the bank is expanding its holdings of tax-advantaged assets. However, because managed revenue is a non-GAAP measure, investors should verify that the bank's assumed marginal tax rate is realistic and consistently applied over time.

Bank A reports GAAP revenue of $10.0 billion, which includes $200 million in tax-exempt interest income from municipal bonds. Assuming a corporate tax rate of 21%, the bank calculates the pre-tax equivalent of that tax-exempt income as $200 million / (1 - 0.21) = $253.16 million. The tax-equivalent adjustment is $53.16 million ($253.16 million - $200 million). Adding this to GAAP revenue, Bank A reports managed revenue of $10.0 billion + $53.16 million = $10.053 billion.
