Nasdaq Composite

A broad market index of over 3,000 common equities listed on the Nasdaq stock exchange, heavily weighted toward technology and growth sectors.

The Nasdaq Composite is a broad, market-capitalization-weighted stock market index that tracks nearly all the common equities listed on the Nasdaq stock exchange. Because of the exchange's historical appeal to early-stage technology firms and its flexible listing requirements, the index is heavily weighted toward high-growth sectors, particularly technology, consumer services, and biotechnology. It excludes other asset classes like preferred stocks, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), and debt securities. To calculate the index value, the market capitalization of each constituent stock is multiplied by its last sale price. This total value is then divided by an index divisor, which adjusts for corporate actions like stock splits or spin-offs to ensure continuity over time. Because it is market-cap weighted, mega-cap technology giants exert a disproportionate influence on the index's daily movements compared to smaller listed companies. Investors monitor the Nasdaq Composite as the primary barometer for growth stocks, innovation sectors, and overall risk appetite in the equity markets. When the index is rising rapidly, it typically signals strong investor confidence and a willingness to pay premium valuations for future earnings. Conversely, sharp declines in the index often point to sector rotation out of high-multiple growth stocks and into defensive or value-oriented assets, or a broader rise in interest rates which discounts the value of distant future cash flows.

Suppose the Nasdaq Composite consists of only three companies. Company A has 10 million shares at $100 (Market Cap = $1 billion), Company B has 5 million shares at $50 (Market Cap = $250 million), and Company C has 2 million shares at $25 (Market Cap = $50 million). The total market capitalization of the index is $1.3 billion. If the divisor is set at 1,000,000, the Nasdaq Composite index level is calculated as $1,300,000,000 / 1,000,000 = 1,300.
