5-Day Forward Return

The realized S&P 500 (SPY) return measured five trading days after a signal date; the yardstick used to judge every Pattern Analysis signal.

The 5-day forward return is a performance metric that measures the percentage change in the price of an asset—typically the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY)—exactly five trading days after a specific signal or event occurs. In systematic trading and pattern analysis, this metric serves as the primary yardstick for evaluating the predictive accuracy of short-term market signals. By tracking the asset's price over a fixed five-day window, analysts can objectively determine whether a given signal successfully anticipated the market's immediate direction. To calculate this return, the closing price of the asset on the day the signal is generated (Day T) is compared to the closing price five trading days later (Day T+5). This timeframe excludes weekends and market holidays, focusing strictly on active trading sessions. This five-day horizon is specifically chosen to align with the short-term forecasting windows of underlying predictive models, such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs) used in pattern recognition. For retail investors, tracking the historical distribution of these returns—including the average return and the percentage of positive outcomes (the win rate)—helps set realistic expectations for a signal's performance. A common pitfall is assuming that a positive historical average guarantees a positive return on any single trade. In reality, individual 5-day forward returns are highly volatile and subject to broader market noise, meaning these metrics should be interpreted as statistical probabilities over many trials rather than guaranteed outcomes for a single transaction.

A pattern signal is triggered on Monday's market close when the SPY ETF is trading at $500.00. To find the 5-day forward return, we look at the closing price on the following Monday (exactly five trading sessions later, assuming no holidays). If the SPY closes at $507.50 on that day, the forward return is calculated as: ($507.50 - $500.00) / $500.00 = 0.015, or +1.5%.
