Stock Connect
A mutual market access program allowing international and mainland Chinese investors to trade shares in each other's markets.
Stock Connect is a mutual market access program that links the stock exchanges of mainland China (Shanghai and Shenzhen) with the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong. This regulatory framework allows international investors to trade eligible mainland Chinese shares (known as Northbound trading) and mainland Chinese investors to trade eligible Hong Kong shares (known as Southbound trading) directly through their local brokers. Before Stock Connect, foreign access to China's domestic A-share market was heavily restricted and required special institutional licenses. By routing orders through Hong Kong, the program utilizes a closed-loop clearing system where capital is settled in renminbi but cleared through Hong Kong's established legal and financial infrastructure, minimizing cross-border capital flight risks for Chinese regulators. For retail and institutional investors, Stock Connect is a critical barometer of global capital flows into and out of China. Investors closely monitor daily net capital flows—specifically Northbound inflows—to gauge foreign sentiment toward Chinese equities. Inclusion in the program is also a major catalyst for individual stocks, as it immediately exposes them to a massive new pool of potential buyers and liquidity. While Stock Connect has greatly simplified access, investors must navigate unique pitfalls. These include differing holiday schedules between Hong Kong and mainland China (which can lead to trading suspensions on days when only one market is closed), daily quota limits on aggregate transaction volumes, and differing regulatory rules regarding short selling and price limits.
An international investor wants to buy shares of a mainland Chinese company listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange. Instead of applying for a complex institutional license, the investor places an order through their Hong Kong broker. The broker routes the order through the Northbound Stock Connect link. The transaction is executed in Shanghai, settled in Renminbi (RMB) through Hong Kong's clearing house, and the investor successfully gains direct exposure to the Chinese A-share.
